No one was injured during a construction accident at Pretoria's Menlyn Park shopping centre on Monday‚ as the area was cordoned off‚ centre management said.

The incident follows recent ceiling collapses during renovations in the East Rand and Sandton City shopping centres.

Menlyn Park Shopping Centre‚ which is owned by Pareto Limited‚ is currently undergoing a R2 billion expansion and refurbishment‚ which will add over 200 news stores and create the largest shopping centre in Africa‚ according to marketing manager Andrea de Wit.

She confirmed that "a concrete slippage occurred during a pour".

"The matter is currently being investigated. The area has been appropriately barricaded off and no one was injured in the incident.

"Murray & Roberts‚ the contractor on the project‚ as well as the centre’s support services‚ were quick to respond. Whilst emergency services were immediately called to the site‚ no injuries were sustained."

De Wit added that‚ "to date‚ this phase of the project has tracked a period of over 1.3 million man hours without a lost time injury free (LTIS) incident‚ a great achievement on a project of this scale and intricacy".
