The Compensation Commissioner reward organisations that achieved reduction in the number of injuries and consequently, in the amount of compensations claimed by injured workers.

Firms can be rewarded in two ways for improving their safety effort and reducing their accident claims:

Awards to individual firms in the form of:

    1. Merit rebates: These are awarded to each firm whose claims against the Fund are less then 62% of the TOTAL ASSESSMENT PAID, over a three year period. This rebate can be up to 50% of assessments paid.

Penalty Assessment: Firms whose claims are excessive can be made to pay a penalty assessment to cover the additional cost of claims.
    2. Assessment rates variation:

The assessment rate of industry categories can be lowered if the category experiences favourable claims. The converse is, of course, also true and categories experiencing high claims could be assessed at a higher rate.
