IPCSA postponed Safety Consultant Registration

Discussion in 'Administrative & Legal Requirements' started by The Cygma Group, Sep 12, 2012.

  1. The Institute for Professional Consulting of South Africa has postponed its planned enrolment of CSO’s into the national register, pending the outcome of SACPCMP’s registration process plans.

In a confidential interview with IPC’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Lindi Alberts, she stated that the IPC intends to amend its registration criteria for consultants in the Construction Safety discipline to include compulsory registration with the SACPCMP. It thus means that a Safety Practitioner cannot register as a professional consultant without having the SACPCMP registration already in hand.
“We have not contacted any professional bodies yet, as our own internal controls are still being developed, but what I can say at this stage, is that the proposed levels of certification for CSO’s will not be considered. Our aim is Consumer Protection against “incompetence for a feeâ€. As a NPO, we need to rely on our sponsors and donors, and we will be guided by the requirements from big business, tertiary institutions and industry leaders.†Dr Alberts explained.

The initial release of the IPC’s intention to regulated the Safety Consulting industry has raised quite a few eyebrows, but concerns were mostly unfounded on fear of competition. The IPC welcomes the formation of professional bodies with legal standing, in order to minimize the influx of unqualified applications. Once the SACPCMP’s registration process is in place and running, registered members can apply for IPC accreditation, provided they further meet the IPC requirements.

On request as to what these requirements will be, it was briefly indicated that it is still under discussion, but will definitely involve the following:
    1. Only registered companies can apply for accreditation,
    2. The CEO / Principal Member must be registered as a Professional (Top Level),
    3. All other consultants in the company will be registered within their relevant professional registrations.
    4. Membership will be based on the number of employees within a Consulting Firm.
As to when the first call for registration will be released, Dr Alberts confirmed that it will not be in 2012 as the EXCO still need to be appointed.
